Design and Architecture in Stockholm

From the proportions of a grand facade to the curves of an armchair, this tour invites you to see Stockholm with fresh eyes. As we walk through Norrmalm, Kungsholmen, and Östermalm, three of the city’s central neighborhoods, we will explore the connections between architectural history and the people and ideas that have shaped Nordic design.

Stockholm through its architecture

Depending on your chosen tour length (three or four hours), you will discover four or more of the architectural landmarks featured on this tour. These include City Hall, with its National Romantic influences; the Concert Hall (Konserthuset), with its neoclassical proportions; and the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten), whose richly decorated Art Nouveau facade invites a closer look. Other featured buildings include the House of Culture (Kulturhuset), the former Central Post Office Building, the Matchstick Palace, an elegant example of the 1920s classicism known as Swedish Grace, and Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre.

We will explore these buildings from the outside, discussing their architectural styles, history, and the ideas that shaped their design. Beyond admiring the facades, we will see how materials, proportions, and decorative details reveal each building’s purpose and the ambitions of its time.

Nordic design, up close

Between architectural stops, we will step inside some of Stockholm’s best-known design stores, including Svenskt Tenn and Nordiska Galleriet. We will take a closer look at furniture, lighting, textiles, and decorative objects, exploring the designers’ choices of materials, colors, and forms, along with the ideas that inspired their work.

Along the way, we will introduce you to leading figures in Nordic design and their classic creations, from Josef Frank’s colorful textiles and Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair to Alvar Aalto’s distinctive glass vase. Their varied approaches reveal the breadth of Nordic design, where bold patterns and sculptural forms sit alongside simplicity and function.
